Susan Aulik is an abstract painter with an intuitive creative process. She follows where the paint leads her in each work. In this new series, strange creatures emerge from lush pictorial planes. These characters came out as a surprise as the artist went to the canvas while sheltering in place. They seem to have originated from a primal subconscious place. Maybe you have some friends like them? Come meet them at the Werkshack.

“Blossoms rupture and rapture the air” This is a line from And I Was Alive by Osip Mandelstam, a poem written in 1937 and translated from the Russian by Christian Wiman.   The beauty of nature is both fierce and fragile: the destructive power of a tornado wrapped in the delicacy of flower petals.
