“le Cirque – Encore!”: New Work by Elaine Maute`

September 25 @ 12:00 pm - November 6 @ 5:00 pm

Manna Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of Oakland artist Elaine Maute`’s most recent work.  ”le Cirque – Encore!”.  The exhibition opens Saturday, September 25 and continues to Saturday, November 6.  Elaine will greet gallery guests at a reception on Saturday, September 25, 2021 from 2 to 4 pm when she will discuss the ideas and issues behind her latest work.

Elaine is fascinated with the magic world created by the circus and this is her second show based on this theme.  She says, “I have always been entranced by the beauty and movement of circus performers.  Circus folks work for years training their bodies to twist and curl and move in unimaginable positions.  They then give amazing, death defying shows that leave us speechless with their daring and beauty.  I have taken the movement and color from these entertaining and startling actions and abstracted them into a personal interpretation in my recent paintings.  This is not the first time I have been inspired by the circus, but these pieces are certainly the most fun, the most abstract and the largest of my compositions based on circus movements.”

Coming from a family of theoretical scientists, Elaine has always been attracted to the abstract in art.  She believes abstraction can command subtle nuances of meaning that reach far beyond the everyday, mundane reality most of us live in.  She is drawn to primal shapes, iconic forms and the intricacies of geometry.  She has approached her abstract sensibilities through a variety of mediums including paintings, collage, encaustic and three dimensional work.
