About the Artist
Jan Watten has a passion for expressing the essence and core of her subject's being. This vision of purity and simplicity was nurtured during her youth â€" and inspired by the experience of growing up in Asia and support from her mother, who was an artist and gallerist. Watten's work revolves around the idea of identity â€" focusing on capturing an aspect or an isolated moment of her subjects â€" whether the subject matter is human or plant life. In this series Unexpected Landscapes, Watten used a rudimentary and low-tech film camera for this study of images captured in the natural world around her. These photographs are in black and white as she feels that this reduces an image into simple and basic elements without the interruption of color and extraneous information. Watten has a BFA in Photography from California College of Arts and Crafts, and has been making photographs for over 25 years in her Oakland studio in the Jingletown Arts District. She has shown domestically and internationally, and was profiled in Black and White Magazine in 2010.
